The sounds of Japanese orin brass bells

Orin is a Japanese brass bell, which is often used for Buddhist rituals and ceremonies, typically during sutra reading, the priest will sound the orin bell at the beginning to align their voice’s pitch with the bell’s tone. During the service, the bells serve different purposes, such as improving the practitioners’ focus and concentration or calming their minds etc.

Orin bells are carefully crafted by the specialist artisans, many of them are based in Takaoka in Toyama Prefecture, a city that has been famed for its metal craftsmanship since the early Edo period (1603 – 1867 CE).

Although Orin was originally produced for these purposes, many people have noticed the importance of the soothing and healing effects of the sounds and they have recently been used for relaxation purposes too.

MA by So Shi Te Tokyo has also been interested in these orin bells and we carefully selected 3 different types of orin bells to start with and we are planning to extend our collection even more in the future.

We have recorded the sounds of each bell, but unfortunately the recorded sound can be largely affected by the quality of the speaker used as well and we believe that it is the best experience to listen to the real sounds at our store in person, so if you have a chance to visit Tokyo, please visit our store to try them out.

  1. Aristorin

Aristorin comes in two sizes and the smaller sized one has higher pitched sound and the larger one is a little lower.

As the size becomes bigger the price also goes higher as well, so the price of the smaller size is 18,000yen and that of the larger one is 26,000yen+tax.

2. Tenorin

Tenorin is a hand-bell type and you can listen to the sound by shaking it like on the video.

The size is the same, but their sounds are very different depending on the colors i.e. the silver one is noted for its higher pitched tone compared to the black one.

The price is 9,000yen+tax.

3. Otomorin

Otomorin comes with the paper crafted cushion, but the cushion also becomes the case for the orin to be carried with you.
Moreover it also comes with a power stone to sound the bell.
Although it is very small and reasonable, the sound is still beautiful and it will be a perfect gift for those who require relaxation and healing.

The price is 6,000yen+tax.

4. Heaven’s bell

Heaven’s bell

Heaven’s bell is a instrumental bell, which comes with two orin bells connected face to face and small balls are inside the bells. As you hit the bell with the stick (it is also included in the set), the balls inside the bells vibrate making that cute tickling sounds and the larger bell sounds deeper and the smaller one sounds lighter.

The price is 23,000yen+tax.
