Iwatemo series Handcrafts from Iwate Japan with Harri Koskinen design

Iwate is located in the north of mainland Japan and there are still many craftsmen living in that area. That area is especially famous for sand casting products called Nanbu-tekki (南部鉄器).

Internationally renowned Finnish designer, Mr. Harri Koskinen, collaborated with a company in Iwate to create new products from the local crafts. The Iwatemo project started in 2016 from the research process e.g. learning the local history and the traditional crafting techniques etc.

The history of nanbu-tekki sand casting ironware dates back to Edo period (16th to 19th century) and Iwatemo kettles are made by Sankyo Kinzoku Inc. in this area.

The typical products they produce are iron kettles and they are usually round shapes due to the limitation of the manufacturing procedure i.e. round shape is obviously easier to make with the sand casting technique, but what Mr. Harri Koskine proposed was very unusual square shape kettle.

   Size : W19 x D16 x H20cm

   Volume : 1000ml

The hot water boiled in this kettle becomes mild and soft in texture, and you can also take iron, which requires daily intake for human body to maintain good health.

The design itself looks very simple, but the square design is rather hard to make compared to the round ones, so this design is very evolutional and marked an important significance to the history of nanbu-tekki, I believe.

 The price is 38,400yen+tax.

He also collaborated with the local porcelain craftsmen, Tourai, who make the products all by hand using potter’s wheels.

Those products made using the potter’s wheels are obviously different from those mass produced with molds. Although the products made by Tourai look all identical (when the same products are made) because they are highly skilled craftsmen, when you look closely, you can tell that they are not totally the same, but slightly different and when you touch them by hands, you can somewhat feel that difference.  This type of slight difference in shapes provides a sense of warmth and comfort, I reckon.
