Hand painted Yuzen kimono fan from Kyoto

Kyoto has a long history of producing Kimono, which is a Japanese traditional clothes, and Yuzen is one technique used for dyeing the kimono fabrics.

Hand painted dyeing Yuzen is all painted by hand and it is almost like a piece of art.

The base bamboo fan is made in Marukame city, where is famous for producing high quality fan, and the specifically dyed base fabric is glued onto it (normally this type of fan has paper on the surface, but this Yuzen fan uses fabric instead).

The Yuzen dyeing technique begins by outlining a drawn pattern on the Kimono fabric with a mixture of rice paste containing rice powder etc. The dried rice paste mixture, called a paste resist, provides a barrier  to prevent the brushed on dye from seeping into other parts of the fabric.   The fabric is, then, painted with a brush using the desired dye colors after the paste resist dries. When the paint is dry, the fabric is smoothed with steam to remove the rice paste.

The cherry blossoms with two rabbits motif fan is 9,500yen+tax.

The fan can, of course, be used as a practical fan, but it will be a decorative art on your wall.

The chrysanthemum is beautifully painted on one side of the fan leaving the other half blank like how kimono is often designed.  9,500yen+tax.
