Echizen Washi Handcrafted durable paper Eico bags

Echizen city, where has over 1,500 year history of handcrafted washi paper, is located in Ishikawa prefecture of Japan. Washi is made using fibers from the inner bark of the gampi tree, the mitsumata shrub (Edgeworthia chrysantha), or the paper mulberry (kōzo) bush.

Washi is generally tougher than ordinary modern paper made from wood pulp and real washi paper can be even washed like a cotton cloth.

There are many washi paper craftsmen in that area and each of them have their own special skills to create different types of washi papers.

Mr. Osada of Osada Seishi-sho has historically been making decorative Fusuma washi (Fusuma is a sliding door used to divide rooms in a traditional Japanese houses) and he has uniquely developed various types of artistic paper crafting techniques so his works are distinctively artistic compared to other paper craftsmen.
