Hakata magemono is a traditional crafts from Fukuoka, Japan. Magemono (曲げ物)literally means ‘Bent thing’ and it is generally made with Japanese cedar.
Me on the left and Ms. Tamaki Shibata, who is the principal craftswoman, in the middle. As far as I know she is the only female craftswoman who makes this type of crafts in Japan.
This craft is generally called Wappa (わっぱ) in Japanese and Akita prefecture, which is located in the north of main land Japan, is the most famous region for the production of this craft. There are two families (both families are called Shibata) who have been making the crafts in Fukuoka and their products are called Magemono rather than Wappa, although they are identically similar.
Bento lunch boxes are the most popular items of all because they say it keeps rice moist and the rice stays tasty even when it gets cold.
The bento boxes come in various sizes and the smallest one is 5,500yen+tax, which is much cheaper than those of Akita. The price of the largest size is 7,500yen+tax.
The larger round containers, which are called ‘Meshi-bitsu’ (飯びつ), are to keep steamed rice temporarily.
When you keep rice in an electric rice cooker, the rice generally gets either too soggy or too dry and it loses its taste after a certain period of time, but these wooden containers keep the rice moist and tasty.
You can, of course, use them for other purposes as you like e.g. to keep kitchen items etc.
S 8,500yen+tax, M 10,000yen+tax, L 13,000yen+tax
This crafts remind me of Shaker boxes, but the noticeable differences are that the Magemono in Japan uses the cherry tree barks to connect the wooden band as you can see the brown dots on the connecting area of the containers.
They also make this type of plate (菓子皿). 11,000yen+tax. The size is about 21cm in diameter.
These trays usually come in two different sizes, but the size can be custom made for your need.
The smaller one is about 24cm in diameter and the larger one is about 30cm. The prices are 8,000yen+tax and 10,000yen+tax respectably.
The photo is of the larger one with a teapot and tea cups (both of them are available at my store).
These are three different sized place mats.
Sizes are S: about 30cm, M:34cm, L:38cm in diameter.
The prices are S: 12,000yen+tax, M:15,000yen+tax, L: 20,000yen+tax
The large size is large enough to hold several bowls and plates at the same time.
Standard wine cooler 25,000yen+tax
Two layered heart shaped wine cooler 55,000yen+tax.
The ice bucket comes with the bamboo tongs. 13,000yen+tax.
One of the craftswoman is sewing the wooden band with the cherry tree barks.
The bento lunch boxes and the round containers are waiting for being processed at the next stage.
