There are numerous number of potters and ceramic artists in Japan, and some of them are internationally renowned craftsmen. My work is to find those craftsmen who have not yet been internationally remarked and introduce them to the rest of the world.
So many craftsmen in Japan end their lives without being recognized internationally, although their skills and aesthetic have achieved to the level where more attention should be paid to.
It is also true that there are those craftsmen who are not interested in wealth and fame, and they are happy with who they are and are interested only in achieving their own goals of perfecting their skills. It is, however, interpreted as loss of our cultural treasure, when these perfected skills are not recognized internationally.
Mr. Kouichi Mizuno’s works have generally been characterized by the very thin and delicate looking potteries. There are many potters who also do the similar things, but what differentiate his works from others are, I belive, his designs.
His designs are not lavish, but very subtle in a Japanese aesthetic sense. His plates are generally very modest, but they significantly influence the visual aspects of foods served on them and enhance the flavor by stimulating gastronomic sense.
The size of the bowls are about 25cm in the wideth, relatively large bowl. The light blue color is so subtle, but presant color unlike bright blue plates.
He often glaze with darker colors like dark brownish black and dark copper brown, but he also use these lighter glaze.
This plate has grayish off white color and designed like a flower, but because the color is so simple, it does not conflict with the food served on it. It has the large blank rim so that it has an effect of intensifying the impression of food served.
The size is about 17cm in diameter and the price is 4,500yen+tax.
He also makes the same plate with different color as well.
This is similar design but smaller rim area.
The size is about 18.5cm in diameter and the price is the same as above.
These plates are only small selections of Mr. Mizuno’s works and I will introduce more of them when they arrive.
