Japanese lacquerware or Urushi coated bowls by Gatomikio Shohten 我戸幹男商店

Urushi is a natural coating material which can be extracted from the sap of urushi tree and we use that coating generally on wooden products such as trays, bowls and plates etc.

I belive you have seen many urushi coated bowls in Japan, because we normally use them for having miso soup, so they are the most popular urushi products and they come in various shapes.

They can be very reasonable, but the most of those reasonable urushi bowls (anything around 1,000 yen), which can be sold at souvenir stores in touristy areas, are made in China and the bowls made in Japan should cost you at least over 3,000yen.

These urushi products are made in various parts of Japan and Gatomikio Shohten (我戸幹男商店) in Ishikawa prefecture is one of them, but I personally believe that they are one of the best producers in Japan, having extra-ordinally technique to carve woods and also having ability to design attractive products.

Wooden soup bowls “Rin”

You can visit our Yahoo store for details  http://store.shopping.yahoo.co.jp/maaoyama/187-6-12.html

There is also Aoyama Market, which is our own online service

These bowls are made of Japanese Zelkova, which has the beautiful grain, and it is carved thinly and coated with the wipe-lacquering technique to enable to see through the wooden grains. The edges are, then, painted with the silver color adding an aesthetic beauty to them.

There are also bowls for having rice with the same design.

The left one is the soup bowl and the right is a bowl for having rice. As you can see, the soup bowl is taller than that of rice, but you can of course use that rice bowl for soup too.

Miso soup bowls with the carved lines

These bowls are also made by Gatomikio Shohten. They come in four different sizes, S, M, L and LL, and M or L is the most popular size for having miso soup.

Cherry tree bowls for rice

These bowls are made of cherry tree and they are meant to be used for having rice, so it is slightly shallower than the usual soup bowls. (they are 3,500yen+tax / each).

These nesting bowls are a set of 6 and they are called Oryouki (応量器). You can find the information by clicking here.

Gatomikio Shohten has been producing extensive variations of urushi products and the ones I introduced here on my blog are the only small selections of what I personally like to show at my store.

Some of their products are outrageously expensive, but those bowls on this blog are relatively reasonable considering the quality and the design, and that is what I believe good products (the prices are also an important factor to decide what good products should be especially for those which you use regularly on daily life).
