Hippopotamus and Hedgehog unglazed pottery by Ms. Ikuko Umehara 梅原育子

The unglazed pottery animals I am going to introduce today are made by my favourite craftswoman or artist called Ms. Ikuko Umehara from Kyoto.

These are all made by hand without using forming blocks or molds, so the shapes are all different.

She has been making various animals like cats, pigs, sheeps etc, but the hippopotamus is the most popular one amongst of all animals.

They are cute, ain’t they?

They are not glazed, so the colors are nuturally formed in a kiln.

Although hedgehogs can be found at many places in the UK, they are very rare in Japan, but they are getting more pupular as a pet.

The sizes vary depending on the animals and shapes, but they are all around 8 to 10cm and are all 3,000yen + tax (as of today).
