Setsubun – Oniwa soto Fukuwa uchi ochoko (sake cup) 鬼は外福は内お猪口

「鬼は外 福は内」is pronounced Oni wa soto Fuku wa uchi, meaning the demon is out and happiness is in.

We have a festival called setsubun (節分) , which literally means “Seasonal division” and it is the day before the beginning of spring in Japan, which is 3rd  of February. During the setsubun event, we through beans toward outside from our home saying “ Oniwa soto” meaning the demon is out, and then turn around to your home from the window and through beans saying “Fukuwa uchi” meaning happiness is in, wishing for bringing happiness to your home and family.

These small sake cups called Ochoko has demon face outside and happiness (福) is written inside of the cup.

The demon is rather cute looking, but he scares away many kids lol.
